If your work involves using a computer, tablet or mobile phone on a daily basis, you have probably experienced eye strain at some point. Digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome, refers to eye- and vision-related problems caused by prolonged exposure to digital screens.
In this article, Spectrum Eye Care discusses how eye strain occurs and offers some tips on how you can minimize it.
Screens and Digital Eye Strain
Eye strain is often described as a feeling of discomfort, which is likely due to your tendency to blink less when looking at a screen. The symptoms of eye strain vary, so they could manifest as eye strain, blurred vision, dry eyes, headaches or neck and shoulder pain. These symptoms are often caused by different factors such as poor lighting, glare on a digital screen, poor sitting posture, existing and uncorrected vision problems or a combination of any of these factors.
Develop the “20-20-20” Habit
Thankfully, eye strain may not permanently damage your eyes, and there are things you can do to alleviate the discomfort. One of the most recommended techniques is the “20-20-20” rule. To follow this rule, look away from your screen every 20 minutes and focus on an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
Other Tips
Apart from practicing the “20-20-20” rule, you might want to consider reducing the brightness on your screen. Make sure it’s at a comfortable level, so your eyes can relax while looking at a screen. If you’re dealing with glare, you might want to try repositioning your monitor or using an anti-glare screen protector.
