Cataracts are among the most common causes of vision loss in adults, particularly in more than 50% of Americans 80 years and older. Despite the number of affected patients, myths about it persist — some of which can, for example, discourage someone from taking an eye exam. In today’s post, Spectrum Eye Care debunks some of these myths and helps you make informed decisions about your eye health.
“Cataracts Only Affect Older People”
While it is true that cataracts are more common among older individuals, people of all ages can develop cataracts — the risk of developing cataracts increases with age. This emphasizes the importance of being proactive about one’s eye health. Annual eye exams can help determine cataracts (and other eye problems) at their earliest stages.
“Cataracts Are Caused by Eye Strain”
Many believe that cataracts result from eye strain, which is typically caused by reading in dim light or spending too much time in front of a screen. However, factors such as aging, genetics and certain medical conditions contribute to the development of cataracts. If you are exposed to conditions that contribute to eye strain, your local optometrist or eye care specialist may recommend changes to your daily routine and appropriate eyewear.
“Cataracts Can be Reversed With Eye Drops or Other Medication”
Unfortunately, there is currently no product that can reverse cataracts — products that claim to “dissolve” cataracts are not reliable and may cause more harm than good. The only proven treatment for cataracts is surgery conducted by an eye care professional.
“LASIK Can Cure Cataracts”
While LASIK eye surgery is a type of eye surgery, it is not used for the treatment of cataracts; the procedures are entirely different. LASIK is a procedure that corrects vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. On the other hand, cataract surgery involves the removal of the cloudy natural lens and, in some cases, its replacement with an artificial lens.
If you’re considering treatment options for cataracts or other eye conditions, understanding the differences between eye procedures is important. Consult with an eye care professional to determine the best course of action.
