Understanding Common Eye Diseases & Conditions
Knowing that you have a family history of eye disease or discovering that you’re at an elevated risk can feel overwhelming and even a little frightening. It’s completely natural to have concerns about your vision and what the future may hold. At Spectrum Eye Care, our compassionate optometrists are here to support and guide you every step of the way. We genuinely care about being part of your health care journey and answering all your questions along the way.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that damages blood vessels in the retina, leading to blurry vision or even blindness. Early detection can slow or stop its progression, and keeping your blood sugar well-managed is one of the best ways to prevent it from developing.
Regular diabetic eye exams are essential for anyone living with diabetes, as eye damage can happen without noticeable symptoms.
For our patients with diabetes, we offer advanced retinal care in collaboration with Charlotte Eye Ear Nose and Throat Associates, depending on what treatments are needed.
Glaucoma
Known as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma causes progressive vision loss due to damage to the optic nerve. Regular screenings using tools like the Humphrey Visual Field help us detect and monitor glaucoma early, protecting your vision.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. The macula plays a crucial role in activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces, and damage to this area can lead to blurred or distorted central vision over time.
Our optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging allows us to monitor AMD closely and tailor effective treatment plans.
Cataracts
Cataracts cause cloudy or blurred vision and are a common condition that often develops with age. They occur when the clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, making it harder to see clearly.
The condition can affect daily activities such as reading, driving, or recognizing faces and is typically a natural part of the aging process. However, other factors, like injury or certain medical conditions, can also contribute.
In the early stages, we can adjust your prescription to help you manage cataracts, but as they progress, we typically recommend cataract surgery to replace the clouded lenses.
Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a progressive condition that thins the cornea and distorts vision. Early intervention is extremely important because it allows us to stabilize the condition and maintain better vision for a longer period.
From scleral contact lenses to co-managing corneal crosslinking surgery, we’re here to guide your care.
Seasonal Allergies in Charlotte
The pollen that plagues us in Charlotte can cause itchy, red, and watery eyes. While it may be annoying and uncomfortable for some, allergies can be serious, impacting your overall health and quality of life.
We can help relieve your symptoms and guide you to know when it’s time to seek specialist support for your allergies.
Our Diagnostic Eye Care Technology
At Spectrum Eye Care, we consistently invest in diagnostic technology to support accurate assessments of your visual health and help detect damage from eye diseases and conditions early. Without this technology, we quite simply wouldn’t be able to deliver the eye care we believe you deserve.
Each tool allows us to build a complete picture of your ocular health, tailor treatment plans if needed, and track changes over time.
Optos Daytona Plus Retinal Imaging
This device provides ultra wide-field retinal imaging, capturing up to 82% of the retina in one image without dilating your eyes. It facilitates the early detection of various conditions, including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Importantly, when your eyes are healthy, it provides a baseline of your retina to help us detect any changes later.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Optical coherence tomography is an imaging tool similar to ultrasound that uses light waves to capture detailed, high-resolution scans of the retina. It enables your optometrist to visualize and measure the different layers of the retina, helping us to detect and manage age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy with precision
RETeval Electroretinography (ERG)
RETeval uses light pulses to evaluate the health and function of the retina and optic nerve. It’s a quick, noninvasive tool that monitors and predicts the progression of diabetic retinopathy and optic nerve conditions.
Humphrey Visual Field
The Humphrey Visual Field measures a patient’s visual field, including their peripheral vision. It helps diagnose and monitor glaucoma, but it is also important when diagnosing or ruling out strokes and brain tumors.
Fundus Photography
High-definition images of the retina help us monitor changes year after year and detect early signs of systemic conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension, as well as damage from eye diseases.
