Regular Glasses Are No Longer Enough for Nearsighted Kids

Is your child struggling to see the whiteboard at school or squinting to read street signs? Do they get frustrated when reading, or hold books or screens very close to their face?

They may be nearsighted, and the solution isn’t just glasses or contacts—it’s myopia management.

Nearsightedness, also known as myopia, is becoming increasingly prevalent in children. Myopia not only requires a stronger prescription as your child’s eyes grow, but also increases the risk of serious eye diseases, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment, later in life.

We understand the challenges that come with progressive myopia. That’s why we offer comprehensive children’s eye exams and personalized myopia management solutions to slow its progression.

Why Does Myopia Management Matter?

Even mild myopia can have lasting consequences when left unchecked. Any amount of myopia increases the long-term risk of developing vision-threatening conditions. That’s why managing myopia early is crucial for protecting your child’s lifetime eye health.

Additionally, a child’s vision plays a direct role in their learning and confidence. Clear vision is essential for understanding in school, exploring creatively, and thriving in sports. If they can’t see clearly, they don’t have all the tools to set them up for success. A comprehensive eye exam can detect vision problems early.

Signs Your Child Might Be Nearsighted

Every child is different, and while some of them may notice and articulate that there’s something different about their vision, most will not.

It’s even difficult for parents to catch signs that their child can’t see the world’s details clearly.

Common signs of myopia in kids include:

  • Sitting very close to screens or books
  • Complaints about blurry vision
  • Frequent eye rubbing or headaches
  • Closing one eye or tilting their head
  • Loss of interest in activities needing sharp distance vision

How We Diagnose & Manage Your Child’s Nearsightedness

We recommend bringing your school-aged child in for an eye exam at least once a year so we can monitor any changes in their vision. If they have myopia, we may recommend more frequent visits to monitor their myopia management program.

In their exam, we will measure their refractive error to determine their prescription and check the overall health of their eyes. Then we’ll explain the myopia management method we recommend based on your child’s habits, pastimes, and lifestyle.

Ortho-k uses specially designed contact lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the curve of your child’s cornea. Ortho-k not only corrects vision during the day but has also shown significant success in slowing the progression of myopia in children.

Many parents love ortho-k because it allows their child to be free from both glasses and contacts during the day.

MiSight lenses are soft, daily-wear contacts that are clinically shown to slow myopia progression in children. These lenses allow your child to enjoy clear vision without wearing glasses while also managing their condition. They have a long track record of effectiveness, and they’re easy for even younger children to learn to wear.
